Like humans, all dogs produce tartar and plaque. It is thought that this is because of our modern dry food feeding. Should these substances be allowed to build up, they will trap pockets of bacteria, which cause gum disease, tooth rot, bad breath in your Saluki. It may even become necessary for your vet to remove the deposits under a general anaesthetic.

If you start when your dog is young enough, it is relatively easy to train him to have his teeth cleaned; it just needs patience and kindness at the beginning. There are toothpastes that are specially formulated for use with dogs and brushes that are designed for a dogs mouth. Never use your own human toothpaste, which is formulated specifically for our use; dogs find these toothpastes offensive.

Hards biscuits are good for a dog's teeth, there are plenty of chews that are designed for cleaning teeth that are now available from most pet shops. Chewing on a bone is a classic remedy but you should only give your Saluki big raw marrow bones - never cooked chicken or lamb bones, or little bones of any description, as they can splinter and Pierce the dog's stomach lining, causing death.
