Nutrition, exercise and play are highlights of your dogs day. As he has no control over what he is given to eat, it behoves everyone to give the most nutritious food they can offer. Canines are among the most remarkable of animals as far as food is concerned: they can live on the most unlikely foodstuffs,.. or, rather, they can subsist on them. But you will want to give your dog the best. Diet is especially important for active dogs like Saluki. The better you feed your Saluki, the healthier and happier she will be. Incorrect or bad feeding will inevitably result in health problems, such as skin disorders, hysteria, obesity, wasting of the muscles and shortening of life. I believe, fresh natural diet is the best thing you can do for your life companion.

ELEMENTS OF GOOD CANINE NUTRITION

There are several components or elements that make up a sound nutritional feeding program for you Saluki. If any of these elements is neglected or ignored, your dog's diet can not be described as either sound or balanced. These elements are:

  • Protein ( keeping in mind the special needs or constraints of a active growing youngster)

  • Carbohydrates

  • Fats

  • Vitamins and Minerals

  • Water

  • Owner Knowledge

  • Owner Consistency

PROTEIN

Protein provides your Saluki with the key amino acids that are so necessary for:

  1. your dog's progression through the formative stages of her life;

  2. the continued sustaining of healthy bone and muscles;

  3. the body's own repair functions on bone and muscle;

  4. the production of infection-fighting antibodies; and

  5. the production of needed hormones and enzymes that aid in natural chemical processes within the dog's body.

Protein

CARBOHYDRATES

Carbohydrates provide fuel for your Salukis physical activity. Thoroughly cooked grain and vegetable products (processed starches) provide the source for most of the carbohydrates in premium - quality pet foods. Along with fats, carbohydrates are the elements in your Salukis diet that give her usable energy. Carbohydrates are measured by caloric count, or more simply, in calories.

FATS

The fats in your Saluki's diet provide a more concentrated energy source than do carbohydrates. In fact, the same amount of fat will provide twice as much usable energy as a similar amount of carbohydrates. The key vitamins A,D,E and K are delivered by the fats in your Saluki's meals. These are known as fat-soluble vitamins and are useful in helping your dog to develop and maintain healthy skin and a healthy coat.
Fats are especially important in maintaining a dog's nervous system, but they are equally significant in making dog foods more palatable. The dog foods that taste good are those more readily eaten by dogs, thus allowing a food to be not only nutritious and balanced but also enjoyable. Lastly, fat levels are often measured against the general activity level of a dog, with the stresses of hunting, breeding, coursing, and the show ring required more fats than those required for a stay at home "couch potato."

VITAMINS AND MINERALS

While vitamins and minerals are certainly needed by your Saluki for the general functioning of her body, vitamins are one of those good things that can be easily overdone.

WATER

Clean, fresh water is vitally important to the health of your Saluki. Your dog will need lots of quality drinking water available to her at all times. Make pure and clean water as a crucial a part of your pet's balanced diet as any of the other parts of her diet. Keep water bowls full, disinfected, and close by to maintain good health for your Saluki. Lets not forget our specific climate, during hot summer months grab a bottle of water for your Saluki while going for a walk.

OWNERS KNOWLEDGE

Feeding a Saluki or any other breed is responsibility on its own. Not only do growing Saluki puppies require different diets than their adult counterparts, but your Salukis health throughout her life may largely depend on your knowledge of the food you feed her. Your Saluki will be totally dependent on you for everything she daily intakes. Your awareness of her nutritional requirements and which foods can best meet those needs is a key part of your job for your pet. You can always contact your  Saluki's breeder for advise on best feeding.

OWNERS CONSISTENCY

Unfortunately, for many dogs in the country their diet is composed of whatever is on sale. While most dogs can survive on the constant switching of their foods, they will simply not thrive on such a practice. While all dogs, purebred and mixed breeds alike, deserve consistent feeding of a quality food, for a Saluki this is of even greater importance. The physical structure of hunting dog needs a lot of consistent sustenance to develop and then continue functioning.
