There are several good reasons why you should groom your dog regularly. The act of gentle grooming, the passage of a comb pulled through the hair and the brushing is pleasurable for the dog as it assists in the bonding process. It also gives you the opportunity to examine your Saluki. You will be able to notice any skin conditions, cut, abrasions or discharges.
Salukis does not require any special grooming. They are short haired and their hair is invariably smooth and relatively thin. They have the easiest coats to care for, needing only a brush to remove any dead hairs and prevent mats on ears and tail on feathered Salukis. You will also need to polish with a hound glove or a chamois leather, which distributes the coat oils and gives it a shine.
Salukis require occasional baths to prevent infections and fungus.
Salukis that receive ample exercise outside the house will seldom need to have their nails trimmed, ad moving about on rough surfaces should be enough to keep the nails quite short. Dogs that are more sedentary will need their nails attended to. if allowed to continue growing, the nails will impede the normal placement of the foot and affect the dog's gait.
Over grown nails can also be dangerous as they can be ripped off, causing serious injury to the foot.
